Short answer

Most people assume repairing a damaged bumper is the cheaper option. In our shop it usually is not. Once a bumper cover is cracked or its mounting tabs are broken, repairing it takes enough hours that a new cover comes out cheaper — and it comes out better. The exception runs the other way: a bumper that is only scuffed does not need repair at all, it needs paint. And if the bumper carries sensors, the part has to be the original one.

  • Paint, not repair

    Scuffs and scrapes only

The plastic is intact, nothing is cracked, nothing is loose. This is not a bumper repair — it is a refinish. The cover comes off, gets prepped and painted, and goes back on.

  • Replace

    Cracked through

A crack that goes all the way through the plastic is structural. It can be welded, but the repair is labour heavy and the crack is always a weak point afterwards.

  • Replace

    Broken mounting tabs

The tabs that clip the cover to the fenders and the body break easily and they are what holds the panel in alignment. A cover with broken tabs never sits quite right again, and you see it in the gaps.

  • Replace, with the original part

Sensors or cameras in the bumper

Parking sensors, blind spot radar or a front camera change the answer completely. See below — this one is not a preference, it is a fit problem.

FAQs

Is replacing a bumper more expensive than repairing it?

Often it is the opposite of what people expect. Repairing a cracked cover properly takes enough hours that a new part frequently comes out cheaper overall, and it comes out structurally better. Which one wins depends on the car and on what the part costs, so it is worth having someone look at it before you assume repair is the budget choice.

Can a cracked bumper be repaired at all?

Plastic can be welded, so in a technical sense many cracks can be repaired. The question is whether it is worth it, and on most of the work we see it is not: the repair takes a lot of hours and the welded area is always the weak spot afterwards. Send us photos and we will tell you which case yours is.

Does my bumper need an original part?

If it has sensors or a camera in it, yes. On aftermarket covers the sensor openings and the mounting brackets do not line up, and a sensor mounted slightly off is a sensor giving you bad information. On a plain bumper with nothing behind it there is more room to choose.

Will my insurance pay for a new bumper?

Usually, when the estimate shows replacement is the correct repair. Insurers sometimes start from an aftermarket part or from a repair, and that is a conversation we have on your behalf with the damage documented. Our insurance claims page explains how we handle it.

Send us a photo of the bumper.

We will tell you straight whether it needs paint, a repair or a new cover — and if paint is all it needs, we will say so. The estimate is free and commits you to nothing.
