Straight answers about collision work
What is the difference between a body shop and a collision center?
In practice, nothing. They are two names for the same thing: “collision center” is what dealerships and the big chains tend to call it, and “body shop” is what independents call it. What actually changes from one place to another is who does the work and where the car gets painted. A shop with its own booth controls dust, temperature and airflow, and that is most of why a color match still looks right two years later. Ask where they paint, not what they call the building.
Should I take it to the dealership instead?
Most dealerships do not have their own body shop. They send the car out to a shop like ours and add their margin on top, so you are paying a middleman. Where a dealer genuinely helps is with parts still under factory warranty or brand-specific calibrations, and when that applies we say so and coordinate it. For the bodywork and the paint itself, dealing directly with the shop costs less and you get to talk to the person who is actually doing the work.
What are the red flags of a bad body shop?
Pressure to go around your insurance. No written estimate. Not letting you see your own car while it is being repaired. Quoting a full respray over the phone without ever looking at the panels. One more: not explaining the difference between repairing a part and replacing it. A shop worth using will show you the damage, tell you what can be saved and what cannot, and document whatever turns up once the car comes apart.
How long does a collision repair take?
Two things drive it: how far the damage goes, and parts. A bumper with paint moves quickly. A full front end with structural damage takes considerably longer, and very often the schedule is set by how long a part takes to arrive rather than by the work itself. What we can promise is a target date when the estimate is agreed, and a phone call from us if something moves it. You should not find out by calling to ask.
